In practice for the past 30 years, David Smith is experienced in treating a broad range of mental health issues and interpersonal difficulties. He has had extensive training and experience in both long and short term models of psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy as well as couple and group psychotherapy. In addition to his private practice, he has worked in outpatient mental health, primary care, and family counselling settings.

David is an Associate Professor (PT) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University. He is the Coordinator of the Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) training program within the Postgraduate Psychotherapy Program, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and Clinical Behavioural Sciences Program, McMaster University. David is actively involved in teaching, training and supervising psychiatric residents, students and other mental health professionals. In addition to teaching responsibilities, David is Co-Director of the Professional Competencies Program, Undergraduate MD Program, McMaster University.

David holds a Bachelors of Arts (Psychology), University of Waterloo, a Bachelor of Education (Queen’s University) and M.S.W. from Wilfrid Laurier University. David is licensed as a Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and is a member in good standing within the Ontario Association of Social Workers.
